The Challenge
Vlaemynck is a subsidiary of Fermob, the premium French outdoor furniture brand. Their products are deployed across cafés, restaurants, hotels, and commercial spaces in 12 countries. For Vlaemynck, an outdoor umbrella is not a standalone purchase — it is a component of a unified outdoor furniture system.
When the umbrella’s fasteners, coating colors, base connections, and after-sales parts do not align with the rest of the furniture line, front-end store management becomes chaotic. Vlaemynck’s core requirement was not “build us a good umbrella” but “build us an umbrella that fits seamlessly into our global product ecosystem.”
- Integration into the existing brand ecosystem — Screws, connectors, and coating colors had to be compatible with Vlaemynck’s maintenance system across all outdoor furniture. Incompatible specs would multiply management costs across 12 countries.
- Specified Tiger powder coating colors — Vlaemynck uses the European Tiger system across its entire line, specifying Grey (049/72742) and White (038/10089AR). No “close enough” approximations accepted.
- Year-round high-frequency use with near-zero maintenance — Store umbrellas deployed year-round including winter. Long-term sun, frequent opening/closing, coastal locations, high winds.
- Oversized logistics challenge — The 4×4m T60 means 4-meter iron-frame components. Unloading was time-consuming, hazardous, and standard pallet solutions did not exist.

The Solution
Custom Screw and Adapter Integration
Vlaemynck’s logic runs opposite to most projects: the umbrella must adapt to their system, not the other way around. TEMPO adapted item by item:
- Custom M12 screws — Replacing TEMPO’s standard M10 to unify after-sales parts with Vlaemynck’s global furniture maintenance system
- Custom adapter plates — Developed so TEMPO bases integrate with other Vlaemynck outdoor furniture
- Tiger powder coating — Executed to exact color codes: Grey 049/72742 and White 038/10089AR

Solving the 4-Meter Unloading Problem
The 4×4m T60 created a delivery-end pain point: 4-meter iron-frame packages were hazardous and time-consuming to unload. Standard pallet solutions for this length were virtually nonexistent. TEMPO delivered a solution at minimal development cost — safe, efficient unloading without significant packaging cost increase.
Multi-Layer Wind Resistance Validation
TEMPO executed a comprehensive wind validation program: simulated wind load testing, blower testing, rooftop real-world wind field testing, coating abrasion testing, and opening/closing durability testing. The product uses TEMPO’s patented balance structure and passed grade 6 wind resistance validation.

Branded Packaging and Earned Trust
Every batch ships with Vlaemynck-branded packaging standards. The client reorders approximately three times per year based on inventory levels. Production lead time holds at 30–40 days.
In the early years, Vlaemynck sent staff to the factory for on-site inspection. As the partnership matured and quality stabilized, they stopped. Today, shipments go out without client inspection — a direct measure of earned trust.

The Results
From France to 12 Countries
The partnership started in France and progressively expanded to Germany, Denmark, the USA, Austria, the UK, Australia, China (Shanghai), Thailand, Dubai, and Singapore — 12 countries in total. One product standard and one supply system supported global deployment.
Extremely Low Damage Rate
The client reports an extremely low product damage rate, substantially reducing after-sales labor and material costs. For a chain deploying 4–5 umbrellas per location across 12 countries, per-unit savings compound into significant operational improvements.
From One Series to Platform-Level Trust
Vlaemynck has begun entrusting TEMPO with development of additional commercial umbrella series beyond C2 and T60. After 12 years, TEMPO is no longer just the umbrella factory — it is Vlaemynck’s supply partner for its global commercial umbrella standard.
100% On-Time Delivery
Under multi-specification, batch-shipment, and letter-of-credit payment conditions, TEMPO achieved 100% on-time delivery throughout the partnership.
12 Years of Continuous Cooperation
Since 2015, stable reorders approximately three times per year. From on-site factory inspections in the early years to direct shipment without inspection today — the relationship no longer requires active management.
