The Challenge
At a five-star hotel like the Ritz in Dubai, the poolside umbrella is part of the guest experience. A sagging canopy or wobbly frame tells guests something about the property before they sit down.
This project not only needs to provide shade, but also look appropriate in a high-end hotel environment, while being able to withstand strong sunlight, strong winds, low-maintenance operation, and long-term outdoor exposure, including partial exposure to coastal salt.
The project faces multiple constraints:
- Standard plastic bases looked too cheap for the setting
- Marble bases were too heavy for local handling and installation
- Olefin-based fabric system was tearing at canopy pocket contact points
- Replenishment needed to remain stable across multiple models and repeated batches
The Solution
A Base Designed for How Dubai Hotels Actually Operate
TEMPO proposed an iron-box base with local small-stone fill — ships light, fills on-site with locally sourced aggregate, and provides the stability needed for high-wind permanent outdoor deployment. Clean appearance, no heavy equipment required.
Fabric Improvement Through Targeted Testing
When canopy pockets tore, TEMPO traced the failure to specific tear-strength limits in the warp and weft directions, then improved fabric specification for subsequent batches — keeping the project within their preferred Olefin system.
Quality Control Built into Every Shipment
Each batch was validated against hub strength, salt-spray corrosion, carton burst, fabric tear-strength, and pre-shipment inspection before leaving the factory.

With ~14-day sample lead times and 30–40-day bulk production, TEMPO supported the project through repeated batch shipments and ongoing replenishment while maintaining 100% on-time delivery.
